how to clean egr passages 03 mazda protege lx

  • #1

I have a 2000 Mazda Protege LX that I bought recently with 132,000 miles on the odometer.

I was looking for the EGR Valve to clean it and could not find it. I had the throttle body out so I could get a better view.

The pictures, I think, show what I am describing. I'm wondering if the previous owner had the engine replaced at some point?

The Mazda Service Bulletin No: 01-007/02 describes the EGR valve cleaning and location. Mine isn't there.

Would someone with a 2000 Mazda Protege LX take a picture of their EGR valve? I crawled under my car with a flashlight when I had it on ramps and still cannot find the EGR valve. If fact my intake manifold looks different than the picture above.

Alright I think I've confirmed my suspicion that there is no EGR valve on my Mazda. I think I've found the EGR Boost Sensor and the vacuum tube has been cut. I also cannot find the EGR valve. I suspect that the previous owner became tired of the EGR issues and somehow had it removed. When I drove the car you couldn't tell there was any problems so I guess I won't worry about it anymore.

That metal tube that is suppose to run from the exhaust manifold back toward the inlet manifold and to the EGR valve is not there because the port is capped off. This again confirms my suspicion that there is no EGR valve.

I copied a picture from a 2002 Protege but you see that metal tube from the exhaust manifold? Mine isnt there and that location where you see the piece of cardboard is capped off.

I have a 2000 protege 1.8 if you still need a picture for reference purposes, the egr is pretty much exactly the same as on my msp.

My 2000 LX is the same way, I'm pretty sure that 99-00 1.6l do not have an EGR valve.

  • #9

If im not wrong my does have one is behind the manifold.

I have a 2000 protege SE (canadian) with a 1.6L engine and I have no EGR valve. The 99-00 1.6L engines did not have EGR valve! Be happy with it! Lol

Can you show me a picture of it? Maybe they had a ULEV model engine with an egr valve? My 2000 1.6l definitely does not have an egr valve.

i dont have camera but i will try to find one to show the egr

But is better with the egr or without??

No EGR = no problems... but also equals more pollution!

What about fuel economy? I would think that egr might give better economy on the highway.

Also off topic. Does anyone have info for a 4 lug -> 5 lug conversion? I would like to do this and also use the suspension from the 5 lug car. Looking for some pointers.

Mine is located in the same place too!

Codex... I did 4-to-5 lug nuts and drum to disk conversion. PM me if you want more info!

So, some people have EGR on their 99,00 1.6L and some do not. Whats the deal here? I have a 2000 LX with the 1.6l zm-de and there is no EGR. The port on the exhaust manifold is capped off and there is no egr tube.
